About the Project

Muswellbrook is located in the Upper Hunter Region of NSW, about 243km North of Sydney and 130km North-West of Newcastle. Muswellbrook Hospital services include Acute Medical, Surgical, Obstetric, Palliative Care, Pediatric Services, Emergency Services and has 56 beds.

Martin & Ollmann were commissioned by Health Infrastructure to design a new Ambulatory Care Building with a Chemotherapy unit, a Renal unit and Consulting Suites, together with a new Day Stay Dept and design for new theatres that will be constructed in future as the next stage of the development.

The new building design complements the existing structures on site in material selection, colour and scale. The new building has been sited at the south west corner of the existing Hospital Building and creates a new entry which is open and transparent, achieved through the double height atrium space and façade glazing.

The Ground floor level is articulated as a brick base with a mixture of punched square windows to the patient support rooms and full-height corner windows to the more open plan chemotherapy and renal areas. The window design allows for an appropriate level of privacy to the support rooms whilst facilitating pleasing district views out for users when they are undergoing chemotherapy and renal treatment. Level 1 is proposed for future day stay and theatre expansion. This level is clad in a lightweight panellised system which will facilitate future expansion with relative ease. Level 2 is part roof to the south side and service plant area to the north side. This “sawtooth” roof arrangement effectively reduces building bulk and scale to the south entry side with increased elevation to north.
